Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Bishop Dr. Rupert A. Clarke
Sunrise July 26, 1946 - Sunset December 19, 2024
Bishop Dr. Rupert A. Clarke, a devoted servant of God and a visionary leader, passed away on December 19, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and dedication to ministry and mental health advocacy. Appointed by God and anointed by the Holy Spirit, Bishop Clarke faithfully preached the Gospel, touching countless lives with his wisdom, compassion, and leadership.
Rupert Augustus Clarke, affectionately called “Slim”, was born in Catadupa, in the parish of St. James, Jamaica, to Moulton and Vivienne Clarke. From an early age, he displayed a remarkable zeal for learning, often encouraging his siblings to join him in academic pursuits. He first attended Senior Primary School before advancing to Catadupa All Age School, where his passion for education flourished. At the age of nineteen, Rupert enrolled at Bethel Bible College in Windsor Castle, St. Mary, Jamaica. This decision marked the beginning of his lifelong journey in ministry, setting the stage for his unwavering devotion to God’s work. After graduating, he pastored his first church in Bath Mountain, Westmoreland, before migrating to the United States to expand his ministry and serve on a broader scale.
Bishop Clarke served as Administrative and District Pastor at Yonkers Central Church of God (YCCOG/YCOG), where his profound spiritual guidance inspired the congregation. Prior to assuming this role as Senior Pastor at YCOG, Dr. Clarke served as a Senior Pastor at Union Reformed Church of Highbridge in the Bronx and ministered at Bath Mountain Church of God in Westmoreland, Jamaica. Bishop Clarke’s journey in ministry began as a youth minister at Lenox Road Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York.
Before dedicating himself entirely to ministry, Dr. Clarke made significant contributions in the field of mental health. As Associate Director of Psychiatry at Harlem Hospital and Director of the Harlem Methadone Treatment Program, he worked tirelessly to support individuals and communities in need. His visionary approach inspired the establishment of the Harlem House Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program, emphasizing holistic healing and wellness.
A lifelong learner and educator, Dr. Clarke earned numerous degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts from Northwest Bible College, a Minister’s Degree in Theology from Bethel Bible College (Jamaica), a Master of Social Work from Yeshiva University, a Master of Professional Studies from New York Theological Seminary, and dual PhDs in Theology and Psychology from Pacific University and Carolina University. Dr. Clarke completed his Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisory Residency and earned his ACPE from St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. Dr. Clarke received his Clinical Social Worker certificate and Licensed Master Social Worker certifications from the State of New York. In addition, Dr. Clarke was a licensed psychotherapist, a member of esteemed professional organizations, and an author of three books.
Dr. Clarke's passion for education extended to his role as a professor, teaching Greek, Psychology, and Church History at Manhattan Bible Institute and Evangelical Temple. His contributions to the Church of God were immeasurable, serving on the State Council for the Church of God of New York State.
Beyond his professional and ministerial achievements, Bishop Clarke was a devoted family man. He shared over 40 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved first wife, Mildred Valarie Clarke, a partnership built on love, faith, and mutual devotion. Together, they created a life filled with joy and unwavering support, raising their three children Dale, Karen, and Kevin, and leaving an indelible mark on their family and all who knew them.
Following her passing in 2013, Bishop Clarke continued to honor her memory while remaining steadfast in his faith. In 2020, God ordained the union of Bishop Clarke and Rev. Jean E. Clarke. Their marriage has been a tremendous blessing to the body of Christ. Unitedly, Bishop Clarke and Rev. Jean Clarke have continued to be pioneers for the cause of Christ, inspiring others with their unwavering commitment to ministry and their dedication to serving others through the Gospel. His role as a proud father of three, doting grandfather to two, and cherished brother was central to his life. He will always be remembered for his deep love and guidance, which were a source of strength and inspiration to his family.
Bishop Clarke is survived by his loving wife, Rev. Jean E. Clarke; his children, Dale (Judith), Karen, and Kevin (LaQuetta); his grandchildren, Jeremiah and Kaydence; and his siblings, Justin (May), Hyacinth, Gloria, Bevolin (Jerry), Ezard (Daphne), Jemima (Barry), Marcia (Nerue), Elaine, and Cyclin. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members, church family, and friends who will miss his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
